Traditional Iranian architecture has an inseparable connection with geometry. Whether in details and decorations or in the overall scheme and structure of an architectural element, the trace of this geometry is evident. The revitalization and reapplication of these geometric principles can hold a special position in reviving the Iranian identity in architecture. Karbandi is a type of vaulting in Iranian architecture which, due to its geometric structure, provided traditional architects with various characteristics. Reviving this geometry and expanding it to create more varied geometries can offer architects diverse design options. The research question of the present study is: Is it possible to redefine the geometry of Karbandi using algorithmic design tools? For this purpose, tools provided by computational design can be used. This approach not only creates an automated process for modeling this geometry but also, by exploring design responses, can lead to new geometries based on Karbandi geometry. The outcome of this process is achieving an algorithmic model of a Karbandi, whose creation process is integrally programmed. The result of developing these algorithms is the ability to draw a Karbandi with any number of subdivisions, to fit various curves as the arch template, and ultimately, to apply this geometry to free-form surfaces.
