Banknotes will have different functions in post-colonial or post-ideological societies. Depending on the symbolic meanings that their design features carry, money conveys different messages. This study examines the role of banknotes in representing national identity and political legitimacy in four Central Asian countries—Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan—after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Using a combined content analysis approach (quantitative and qualitative), it evaluates four key components: man-made attractions, natural landscapes and animals, national and indigenous symbols, and depictions of notable figures. The findings reveal distinct strategies: Uzbekistan emphasizes religious and historical monuments, particularly along the Silk Road; Tajikistan highlights governmental buildings and national poets; Turkmenistan underscores leader-centric legitimacy and mythological heritage; and Kyrgyzstan showcases mountainous landscapes, the eagle, and contemporary cultural figures, including women. Symbol analysis indicates that shared motifs such as wheat, cotton, crescent, and star link economic, cultural, and ideological narratives, while unique elements like Kyrgyzstan’s tunduk or Turkmenistan’s Akhal-Teke horse reinforce local identity. The study concludes that banknotes function as condensed visual texts, offering an effective medium for examining strategies of identity reconstruction in post-ideological and post-colonial contexts. Beyond their economic function, they serve as instruments of cultural diplomacy and as tools for strengthening national cohesion.
