Abstract
The Holy Shrine Complex of Imam Reza has undergone numerous physical and spatial transformations and expansions throughout different historical periods. These changes have significantly altered the spatial configuration and movement behavior of pilgrims, leading to increasing complexity. Many pilgrims who visit the complex are unfamiliar with its spatial layout; therefore, understanding the spatial configuration, its changes over time, and the functional capabilities of the space to facilitate pilgrim movement is of great importance. The aim of this study is to examine the spatial configuration of the Holy Shrine Complex. A mixed-methods research approach has been employed in this study. In the first phase, through library research, the historical development of the shrine and existing maps were reviewed. In the second phase, spatial configuration and its components were identified. Subsequently, historical maps were redrawn, The components of "Integration," "Connectivity," "Depth," and "Natural Movement" were analyzed, and the findings were interpreted through logical reasoning. The results indicate that in historical periods, central spaces of the shrine—such as the Rawdah al-Mutahharah and the Enqelab Courtyard—had higher integration and spatial legibility. However, in the contemporary period, the addition of new spaces such as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Courtyard and the Razavi Grand Courtyard has led to a more dispersed movement focus and reduced spatial legibility. Furthermore, analysis of parameters such as connectivity, depth, and natural movement reveals a weakening of historical axes and spatial decentralization in modern designs, which has resulted in reduced accessibility and increased difficulty in wayfinding for pilgrims.
