The rapid establishment of factories led to significant changes in urban spaces and had many consequences. One of the industries that received attention and was a symbol of progress for the Pahlavi government (1921-1941) was the sugar industry, which broke free from Russia's monopoly through relentless efforts. Among them, the Abkooh Sugar Factory, as the largest industrial unit, was established in Mashhad and had a significant impact on its surrounding geography. The aim of this research is not to examine the economic history of the Abkooh Sugar Factory. This article, using documentary and library sources and historical research methods, seeks to highlight the role of this factory in the development in the first 20 years of its establishment in the city of Mashhad, and to assess the primary and secondary outcomes of founding this industrial unit. In the first step, the Abkooh Sugar Factory, by producing maximum sugar and its by-products, heavily restricted sugar imports into the country, ensured production growth and independence, facilitated road construction, and created urban security. On the other hand, in the long run, it exacerbated the issue of water scarcity in the Khorasan region, ultimately leading the mentioned industrial unit to further pollute the environment. آغاز سده بیستم میلادی برای کشور ایران، عصر توسعه در تمام زمینه‌ها به‌خصوص اقتصاد بود. تأسیس کارخانه‌ها با سرعتی مثال­زدنی منجر به تغییر فضای شهری شد و پیامدهای بسیاری به بار آورد. یکی از صنایع موردتوجه و نماد پیشرفت برای حکومت پهلوی اول (۱۳۲۰-۱۳۰۴ش)، صنعت قند و شکر بود که با تلاش‌های بی‌وقفه از انحصار روسیه خارج شد. در این میان، کارخانه قند آبکوه، به‌عنوان بزرگ‌ترین واحد صنعتی، در مشهد تأسیس شد و تأثیر بسیاری بر جغرافیای پیرامونش نهاد. هدف این پژوهش، بررسی تاریخچه اقتصادی کارخانه قند آبکوه نیست. این مقاله با استفاده از منابع سندی و کتابخانه­ای و روش تحقیق تاریخی تلاش دارد تا جایگاه این کارخانه را در امر توسعه در ۲۰ سال نخست تأسیس در شهر مشهد نشان دهد و نتایج اولیه و ثانویه تأسیس این واحد صنعتی را برشمارد. در گام نخست،‌ کارخانه قند آبکوه با تولید حداکثری قند و شکر و محصولات جانبی، واردات قند به کشور را به‌شدت محدود و رونق تولید و استقلال را تضمین کرد و باعث گسترش راه‌سازی و ایجاد امنیت شهری شد و از سوی دیگر در بلندمدت مسئله کم‌آبی منطقه خراسان را تشدید نمود و سرانجام، واحد صنعتی مذکور به آلودگی هرچه بیشتر محیط‌زیست، دامن زد. https://jgk.imamreza.ac.ir/article_204543_39765f79f0e92252f3bb2c779cad3e2e.pdf
